This Personality Trait Makes People Rich But It Can Also Be Their Downfall, According to an Expert
This Personality Trait Makes People Rich â" But It Can Also Be Their Downfall, According to an Expert Sometimes strengths and weaknesses can look a whole lot alike. Just take a look at billionaires. Rafael Badziag, an entrepreneur and expert in the psychology of entrepreneurship, spent five years conducting face-to-face interviews with 21 self-made billionaire entrepreneurs around the world (defined as those with a net worth of at least $1 billion) and researching their lives and companies. He found that the same characteristics that make them successful can also have a potential downside. âBillionaires are nonconformists who demonstrate individualism at an early age when they break more than a few rules,â Badziag wrote in his book, âThe Billion Dollar Secret: 20 Principles of Billionaire Wealth and Success.â âOver the years they learn to trust their instincts and go against the grain, even when everyone around them thinks they are out of their minds and advise them against taking chances.â He added: âKnowing when to make the leap versus when to run in the opposite direction often means the difference between bankruptcy and billions.â Itâs billionairesâ independent thinking and reliance on their own judgment that propelled them to success in the first place, but thereâs a flip side, he said â" individualism shouldnât come at the cost of cooperation. For example, billionaire Brian Kim Beom-Su, founder of South Koreaâs No. 1 gaming company, Hangame, told Badziag that passing up an opportunity to partner with a competitor was one of his biggest career mistakes. Hangame struggled to stay at the top, but Beom-Su said the company may have performed better if he had been open to collaboration. Dr. Greg Reid, who interviewed 100 of the worldâs wealthiest people, found that partnering with competitors is one trick the super-rich use to get to the top and stay there. âWhat can you do to partner with your competitors and improve the image of your industry?â he wrote in an article for Business Insider. Billionaires also shouldnât avoid seeking help or advice when needed â" it âmay lead to making simple mistakes or being overwhelmed with the amount of work on your handsâ and become a major limitation, according to Badziag. Taking a Conversational Approach to Writing Your Resume
Taking a Conversational Approach to Writing Your Resume Oftentimes, writing a resume can be difficult because we have a hard time connecting on a personal level to what were writing. While we may relate to the skills we possess, we often take a bit of a mechanical approach when delivering the message. A great way to begin the process of drafting your resume without getting caught in robotic writing is to try taking a conversational approach. By envisioning that youre speaking to a person about your qualifications, you could add depth to your resume. Write as If You Are Speaking to a Person Many people dont internalize when theyre writing their resumes the way they do when theyre writing to an actual person. But writing a resume essentially is telling someone through words, Im the right person for this job. How would you communicate that to a person if you were speaking to them face to face? Would you offer dry statements like, I am responsible for managing sales representatives or would you want to sell yourself by sharing how many sales representatives you manage, how much money youve earned for the company, and why you love your job? You would likely opt for the latter. To mimic this in your resume, review a conversation like this in your mind, and then jot down ideas you might share as you write your draft. Envision Questions a Manager Might Ask Another great way to create your resume using a conversational approach is to envision the hiring manager or key decision maker in a company asking you questions about why you want the job. Just imagine that you own a company. If you wanted people to work within your business, you would likely prefer they have a great deal of knowledge in the areas youre hiring for. In fact, youd love it if they brought exceptional expertise to the table so that you can move the company ahead of the curve. As you can imagine, a hiring manager is looking for the same from you. So think of questions a manager might ask you, then come up with colorful responsesâ"keeping your own company in mind. This could help you align yourself with the true goals of the position and inspire you to share information you believe could propel the company in new and exciting directions. Read Your Resume With a Friend Finally, take time to read your resume to a few people and watch their reactions to your qualifications. Do they react as though theyre impressed by your accomplishments, or are they bored? Get their feedback to help improve your resume. After youve drafted your resume from a conversational perspective, then you can go back and give it a professional toneâ"but have colorful adjectives and action verbs in your arsenal. This approach can help you remember that your resume is designed to deliver a message that youre the right person for the job. Theres no better way to get this done than through the colorful language of a conversation. Itâs important to remember to brand your resume before applying to each new position for more information on branding check out my recent article 5 Key Areas to Target When Branding Your Resume.
